ABOUT WAXING

ABOUT WAXING

Before you prepare for your first or one of many waxing sessions, it is fascinating to explore the origins of waxing. Hair removal has long been a tradition, stretching from the practices of ancient Egyptians right through to the modern techniques used today. In numerous cultures, men have removed hair not only for hygiene, but also as a means of preventing lice and other unwelcome pests. In ancient civilisations, where running water was not readily available, alternative methods were sought to maintain cleanliness. Particularly in cultures shaped by the climate of the present-day Middle East, where heat brings its own challenges, hair removal became an essential aspect of daily life.

Iconic images of Pharaohs with elaborate headwear and their shaved priests illustrate this history well—the headwear served to conceal their smooth scalps and offered protection from lice and other infestations. Notably, Cleopatra herself introduced Gaius Julius Caesar to hair removal after he contracted lice during his military campaigns. The story of hair removal is rich and intriguing, and it is amusing to imagine how the ancients might react to the fact that these practices continue in the present day.

Book Treatment book

The 20th century marked a significant transformation in waxing, influenced by shifts in fashion, media, and the beauty industry. As Hollywood gained prominence, the appearance of movie stars set new beauty standards, with hairless skin becoming increasingly desirable. This trend was particularly notable during the 1920s and 1930s, as beach holidays, shorter skirts and sleeveless dresses became popular, prompting a rise in waxing practices. In response, manufacturers developed new products to satisfy the growing demand for smooth skin.

The 1940s introduced nylon stockings, which further heightened the emphasis on smooth legs. Waxing evolved into a routine for many women, and the era saw the creation of more sophisticated waxing products. Among these innovations were the first commercially available cold wax strips—pre-coated strips that simplified the waxing process and made it more accessible to a broader audience.

Advancements continued through the 1960s and 1970s, with the development of hot waxes designed to be melted and applied directly to the skin. These waxes were then removed using cloth strips, offering greater effectiveness for thicker hair. This technique became the standard for professional waxing treatments, shaping the modern approach to hair removal.

Waxing for Transgender Clients

Waxing is a viable option for clients seeking hair removal. Although it does not offer a permanent solution, routine waxing sessions can gradually weaken hair growth over time. To keep the waxed area in optimal condition between appointments, it is advisable to use recommended home care products. These products help maintain the skin and prolong the effects of waxing, ensuring continued smoothness and comfort.

Clients are encouraged to make an appointment to discuss their treatment area. There is no need to feel embarrassed, as the consultation will be conducted in a comfortable, confidential, discreet, and professional manner.

Methods of Hair Removal

Today, a variety of hair removal techniques are available, each with its own merits: Waxing, Sugaring, Threading, Laser, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Electrolysis. Waxing represents the most ancient method, while sugaring is also traditional, and laser hair removal is the most recent innovation.

Choosing the Right Method

Every technique comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. The choice of hair removal method is deeply personal, influenced by factors such as time, cost, product effectiveness, hair growth patterns, skin reaction, skin type, method of removal, expected results, and the expertise of the salon practitioner.

Our Approach

We use Perron Rigot Wax, combining both Peelable Wax (also referred to as Hot Wax) and Strip Wax (known as Warm Wax) to deliver optimal results for every client. This dual approach ensures that we can tailor our waxing treatments to suit individual needs, providing both comfort and effectiveness.

Peelable Wax (Hot Wax)

Peelable Wax , also known as Hot Wax, is specifically used for sensitive areas such as Brazilian, Hollywood, Bikini, Face (including all areas), Nose, and Ears. This wax is applied in a thick layer, allowed to cool and set, and then gently removed by peeling it off. It is particularly well suited to intimate zones, the face, and clients with sensitive skin. The wax adheres to the hair rather than the skin, resulting in reduced discomfort and pain. It is less likely to cause irritation, making it ideal for those prone to redness.

Strip Wax (Warm Wax)

Strip Wax , or Warm Wax, is applied in a thin layer using either a spatula or a roller. The wax is then removed with specially formulated paper strips or cotton strips. This method is efficient and relatively painless, making it suitable for removing both very strong, thick hair and very fine hair. After treatment, there is no residue left on the skin. Some redness may occur post-waxing but typically subsides within 24 hours.

Pre- and Post-Wax Care

Establishing a regular pre- and post-wax care routine provides considerable benefits for the health and appearance of your skin.

  1. Smoother Skin: Removes dead skin cells, resulting in a polished and even texture.
  2. Fewer Bumps: Helps reduce redness and irritation, yielding a cleaner finish.
  3. Longer-Lasting Results: Weakens hair follicles, extending smoothness for up to four to six weeks.
  4. Reduced Ingrown Hairs: Prevents trapped hairs through effective exfoliation.
  5. Improved Comfort: Lessens pain and sensitivity during future waxing sessions.
  6. Healthier Skin Barrier: Supports hydration and guards against infection.

Pre-Waxing Preparation

To achieve the best results from your waxing treatment, it is important to follow these pre-waxing steps:

  1. Exfoliate gently 48 hours before your session using a mild scrub to remove dead skin. This helps to prepare the skin by eliminating surface debris and promoting a smoother waxing experience.
  2. Take a shower at least one hour before your appointment. Clean skin ensures optimal wax adhesion and reduces the risk of irritation.
  3. Avoid steam rooms and saunas before waxing. Exposure to excessive heat can sensitise the skin and make waxing less comfortable.
  4. Hydrate daily with a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep skin soft. Well-moisturised skin is more resilient and less prone to irritation during waxing.
  5. Cleanse the area with a gentle, non-irritating soap before your session. This removes any residual oils or impurities that might hinder the waxing process.
  6. Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams on the day of waxing to ensure optimal wax adhesion. Products on the skin can interfere with the grip of the wax.
  7. Avoid using products containing retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs for five to seven days before your appointment to prevent skin thinning. These ingredients make the skin more sensitive and susceptible to irritation.
  8. Refrain from consuming alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours prior, as they can increase sensitivity. This will help minimise discomfort during waxing.

Post-Waxing Care

Following your waxing treatment, adhere to these guidelines to promote healing and maintain smooth skin:

  1. Do not touch the waxed area to prevent the transfer of bacteria that may cause breakouts or infections. Keeping hands away from treated skin reduces the risk of irritation.
  2. Avoid oily or drying products; refrain from heavy creams or alcohol-based toners, as these can disrupt the healing process. Gentle, non-comedogenic products are preferable.
  3. Do not wear skintight clothing over waxed areas to reduce irritation and the risk of ingrown hairs, scarring, infection, or delayed recovery. Loose clothing helps the skin breathe and heal.
  4. Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 48 hours to prevent burns or pigmentation. Newly waxed skin is more sensitive to ultraviolet light.
  5. Refrain from hot showers, swimming pools, or hot tubs, as chlorine and heat can irritate open pores for up to 48 hours. This precaution helps avoid post-waxing discomfort and infection.
  6. Avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours, as sweating may clog follicles and increase bumps. Rest allows the skin to recover.
  7. Do not undergo chemical peels or laser treatments for at least one week after waxing, as these can strip the skin. Allowing ample recovery time is essential for maintaining skin health.
  8. Do not exfoliate the skin immediately post-waxing, as this can transfer bacteria, cause irritation, lead to infection, and delay recovery. Wait until the skin has fully healed before resuming exfoliation.

Pre-Waxing Preparation

Proper preparation ahead of your waxing appointment is key to achieving the best results and ensuring your skin remains healthy and comfortable. The following steps will help you get the most from your treatment:

  1. Exfoliate gently 48 hours before your session using a mild scrub. This process removes dead skin cells, clearing away surface debris and promoting a smoother waxing experience.
  2. Take a shower at least one hour before your appointment. Clean skin ensures that the wax adheres properly and helps reduce the risk of irritation.
  3. Avoid steam rooms and saunas before waxing. Excessive heat can sensitise the skin, making the waxing process less comfortable.
  4. Hydrate daily with a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep your skin soft. Well-moisturised skin is more resilient and less likely to become irritated during waxing.
  5. Cleanse the area to be waxed with a gentle, non-irritating soap before your session. This removes any oils or impurities that could hinder the waxing process.
  6. Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams on the day of waxing. These products can interfere with wax adhesion and reduce effectiveness.
  7. Avoid using skincare products containing retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs for five to seven days before your appointment. These ingredients can thin the skin and increase sensitivity.
  8. Refrain from consuming alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours before your treatment. These can increase skin sensitivity, potentially making the waxing process more uncomfortable.

Post-Waxing Care

Good aftercare following your waxing appointment is essential for healing and maintaining smooth, healthy skin. Please follow these guidelines to support your skin’s recovery:

  1. Do not touch the waxed area. This prevents the transfer of bacteria, reducing the risk of breakouts or infection and minimising irritation.
  2. Avoid oily or drying products, including heavy creams or alcohol-based toners. Opt for gentle, non-comedogenic products to support the healing process.
  3. Do not wear skintight clothing over waxed areas. Loose clothing helps reduce irritation, prevents ingrown hairs, and allows the skin to heal more quickly.
  4. Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 48 hours after waxing. Newly treated skin is more sensitive to UV light and at greater risk of burns or pigmentation.
  5. Refrain from hot showers, swimming pools, or hot tubs for up to 48 hours. Chlorine and heat can irritate open pores and delay recovery.
  6. Avoid strenuous activity for 24 to 48 hours. Sweating can clog follicles, leading to bumps and slowing the healing process.
  7. Do not undergo chemical peels or laser treatments for at least one week after waxing. These procedures can further strip the skin and should be avoided until recovery is complete.
  8. Do not exfoliate the skin immediately after waxing. Wait until the skin has fully healed before resuming exfoliation to avoid irritation, infection, and delayed recovery.

Hair Growth & Hair Length Consideration

The ideal hair length for body waxing falls between 0.5 cm and 1 cm, or approximately ¼ to ¾ inch. This length allows for a smooth and clean removal of hair. For sensitive areas such as Bikini, Brazilian, and Hollywood, it is advisable to trim the hair at home using clean, sanitised scissors to minimise discomfort during the waxing process.

If you have recently shaved, it is important to wait at least three weeks, or until the hair has grown to at least 1 cm, before booking your waxing appointment. Shaved hair develops strong roots, and if the hair is too short, waxing may not be effective in removing it entirely.

Wearing tight clothing and sitting for prolonged periods with legs crossed or resting on the knee can encourage hair to grow horizontally. In such cases, the hair may remain visible beneath the skin but cannot be removed effectively through waxing. To help prevent this, it is recommended to wear slightly loose clothing and exfoliate once a week, particularly in areas where horizontal hair growth is likely. Please note, it is not the responsibility of the Beauty Therapist to remove these individual hairs for you.

Patch Testing for Sensitivity

If you are on medication, have a skin-related medical condition, are applying corticosteroid cream topically or taking corticosteroid medication, or have a skin condition that reacts to heat, it is recommended to book a Patch Test at least 24 hours before your waxing appointment. The Consultation will help identify any conditions that are contra-indicated prior to the Patch Test. When the Patch Test is carried out, it will help us monitor for signs of irritation such as redness and its duration, itching, allergic reactions, or sensitivity to our wax.

Our Wax

We use vegan, hypoallergenic wax for both Hot and Strip Wax treatments. If it is your first visit to our salon, or you have any conditions that might cause a reaction, please book a Patch Test so we can review any contra-indications during your Consultation. Medical history and details regarding medications will be required prior to performing a Patch Test. Where relevant, we recommend consulting your personal medical practitioner before booking a Patch Test. Skin sensitivity may result from various factors, and a Patch Test helps prevent widespread reactions to ensure the safety of both clients and staff.

ABOUT ELECTROLYSIS HAIR REMOVAL

About Electrolysis Hair Removal

Unwanted hair is a widespread concern that affects individuals across all genders and backgrounds. For men, it often relates to grooming preferences, while women of all ages and members of the trans community may also seek solutions for excess hair. Over the course of their lives, many people have tried a variety of hair removal techniques, most of which offer only temporary results. While options such as laser hair removal can provide longer-lasting effects, they are not always fully permanent.

Causes & Emotional Effects of Excessive Hair Growth

Excessive hair growth can stem from several medical conditions, including hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and the side effects of certain medications. The face, being the most visible part of the body, often attracts unwanted attention and scrutiny. This visibility can lead to diminished self-esteem, loss of confidence, and, all too often, embarrassment for those affected.

Electrolysis: The Proven Permanent Solution

Electrolysis remains the only scientifically proven method for permanent hair removal. It is effective across all skin and hair types and colours, and can be used on any area of the body. However, it is most commonly performed on facial areas such as the upper lip, chin, brow, neck, and cheeks.

History & Development of Electrolysis

The technique of electrolysis dates back to 1875, when Dr. Charles Michel, an ophthalmologist, first utilised it to treat ingrown eyelashes. Since that time, electrolysis has undergone significant advancements, incorporating modern technology and refined methods to improve both its efficacy and comfort. With a history spanning over a century, it remains a widely recognised and reliable approach for achieving permanent hair removal. Notably, it is the only method approved by the FDA (USA) for permanent hair removal.

How Electrolysis Works

Electrolysis is a safe and effective procedure that removes unwanted hair in a progressively permanent manner. The method involves inserting a tiny probe, similar in size to an eyelash, into the hair follicle. Upon insertion, a short burst of electric current is delivered, targeting the internal structure of the follicle, the bulbous root, and the blood supply. This process prevents the follicle from receiving nutrients, thereby inhibiting future hair growth. The treated hair is then gently extracted and discarded. Because each hair follicle follows its own unique growth cycle, multiple treatments are required to ensure lasting results.

The Science Behind Electrolysis & Hair Growth Phases

The effectiveness of electrolysis is closely linked to the natural cycle of hair growth. Every hair on the body grows independently, each following its own unique timeline. This means that not all hairs will be at the same stage of growth at any given moment.

Electrolysis delivers the best results when targeting hairs in the Anagen Phase—the period when hair is actively growing and firmly attached to the follicle. During this stage, the electric current is able to destroy the root with greater efficiency, which is why understanding the Hair Growth Cycle is so important in achieving permanent hair removal.

Hair Growth Phases

  1. Anagen (Growth Phase):
  2. At this stage, the hair is fully active and anchored deep within the follicle—making it the prime target for electrolysis. The sweet spot for Electrolysis!
  3. Electrolysis is most effective on hairs that are in active growth, which are usually visible or just beginning to emerge.
  4. Because not all hairs are in anagen at once, it is necessary for other hairs to cycle into this phase over time, which means regular electrolysis sessions are required for thorough results.
  5. Catagen (Transitional Phase):
  6. This is a brief, transitional period lasting about two weeks, in which the follicle shrinks and begins to detach from its blood supply.
  7. As the hair detaches from the follicle, electrolysis can still be performed, but its effectiveness is reduced compared to the anagen phase.
  8. Telogen (Resting Phase):
  9. During this stage, the hair is fully detached from the follicle and will soon fall out naturally.
  10. Electrolysis is ineffective on hairs in this phase, as they are no longer connected to the follicle.
  11. Exogen (Shedding Phase):
  12. Very old hair is finally shed an new hair cycle starts again

Why Multiple Electrolysis Sessions Are Needed

Since each hair follicle operates on its own cycle, with hairs growing and shedding at different rates, multiple Electrolysis sessions are required to ensure that all hairs are treated as they reach the anagen phase.

The number of sessions needed will vary depending on the area being treated and the density of hair present. It is also important to note that not all hair follicles respond the same way to Electrolysis. Some follicles may be more resistant, hormonally influenced, or simply take longer to respond, making persistent and consistent treatment necessary for effective removal.

Results can vary between individuals. Some people may see permanent hair removal after only a few treatments, particularly in cases where just a few facial hairs are present, while others may require a longer treatment plan. The overall duration and success of treatment depend on factors such as the area of the body, hair density, and hair type.

Staying committed to the recommended course of sessions is key to achieving lasting results.

Types of Electrolysis & Comparative Benefits

There are three primary types of electrolysis, each employing a distinct technique to deliver the electric current necessary for hair removal:

  1. Galvanic Electrolysis: Uses direct current (DC) to create a chemical reaction that destroys the hair follicle.
  2. Thermolysis Electrolysis: Utilises alternating current (AC) to generate heat, which effectively destroys the follicle.
  3. Blend Electrolysis: Combines both galvanic and thermolysis methods, providing a balanced approach that may be especially effective for certain hair types.

Benefits of Electrolysis

Electrolysis offers a variety of advantages, making it an attractive option for those seeking permanent hair removal:

  1. Permanent Results: Electrolysis is the only method recognised by the FDA for permanent hair removal.
  2. Versatility: This method is effective for all hair types and colours, in contrast to laser hair removal, which is less successful on light-coloured hairs.
  3. Precision: Electrolysis targets individual hairs, making it ideal for eyebrow shaping and removing hair from small, specific areas.
  4. Safety: When carried out by a licensed electrologist, electrolysis is a safe procedure with minimal side effects.

Transgender Clients

Transgender clients often face significant challenges when it comes to daily facial hair removal. Managing facial hair growth, especially when attempting to conceal it with makeup, can be particularly demanding. This difficulty is compounded when trying to maintain a presentable appearance at work or during social occasions, making the process both stressful and inconvenient.

Electrolysis, although time consuming, provides a long-term solution for permanent hair removal. While alternative methods may offer temporary results, they often come with limitations. Electrolysis stands out as the only hair removal treatment suitable for all hair colours and skin types. The overall duration of the process depends on the amount of hair to be removed and the frequency of treatment sessions. In many cases, achieving desired results may take at least a couple of years, sometimes longer, emphasising the importance of starting treatment as early as possible.

Clients are encouraged to make an appointment to discuss their treatment area. There is no need to feel embarrassed, as the consultation will be conducted in a comfortable, confidential, discreet, and professional manner.

Consultation & Patch Testing

Before any electrolysis treatment can begin, every new client must attend a consultation and patch test. This initial appointment allows the practitioner to assess the client’s suitability for the treatment and determine the most appropriate method. Clients will have the opportunity to learn about the treatment process, ask questions, and discuss available options.

After the consultation, a patch test (taster session) is performed to establish the treatment settings best suited for hair removal and to observe how the client’s skin responds. These settings are recorded, and the client must wait at least 48 hours to ensure there are no adverse reactions before proceeding with the treatment. Advice will be provided regarding what to expect following the procedure.

TRANSGENDER CLIENTS

Transgender Clients

Transgender clients often encounter considerable challenges regarding hair removal, particularly when managing facial hair growth. Concealing facial hair with makeup can be especially demanding and stressful, especially for those striving to maintain a presentable appearance at work or during social occasions. This ongoing effort not only increases daily pressure but can also be inconvenient and impact confidence.

Waxing

Waxing is a suitable option for those seeking effective hair removal. While it does not achieve permanent results, regular waxing sessions can gradually weaken hair growth over time. To maintain the condition of the waxed area between appointments, it is advisable to use recommended home care products (see under ‘About Waxing’). These products assist in keeping the skin smooth and comfortable, while also prolonging the benefits of waxing.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis provides a long-term and permanent hair removal solution, although it can be time consuming. Unlike other methods that may only deliver temporary results or have certain limitations, electrolysis is the only treatment suitable for all hair colours and skin types. The length of the process depends on the amount of hair and the frequency of sessions, with many clients finding that achieving their desired results may take at least a couple of years, sometimes longer. Therefore, beginning treatment early is important.

Patch Test Requirements for Waxing Treatments

  • 15 min
  • Free

If you have received a waxing treatment in the past and did not experience any adverse reactions, such as irritation or sensitivity, it is not necessary to book a patch test before your next appointment. This guideline ensures that clients who have previously tolerated waxing well are not required to undergo unnecessary testing.

A patch test is only required under specific circumstances. If you have a severe skin condition that affects the area you wish to have waxed, or if you are currently taking strong medication known to negatively impact your skin, or that could potentially affect your skin during the waxing process, a patch test must be performed. The purpose of the patch test in these cases is to ensure your safety and to minimise the risk of skin reactions.

ELECTROLYSIS HAIR REMOVAL

Electrolysis Consultation & Patch Test

  • 45 min
  • £25

It is a strict requirement that a full consultation and Patch Test must be completed prior to undergoing any Electrolysis treatment. The Consultation is a comprehensive process where the practitioner will provide a detailed explanation of the Electrolysis procedure, covering all aspects associated with the treatment. This session also offers you the chance to discuss the specific areas you would like treated and to raise any questions or concerns you may have.

Once the consultation is complete and your suitability for the treatment has been confirmed, a patch test (taster session) is performed to establish the treatment settings best suited for hair removal and to observe how your skin responds. These settings are recorded. You must wait at least 48 hours to ensure there are no adverse reactions before proceeding with the treatment. Advice will be provided regarding what to expect following the procedure

The outcomes of the patch test will inform the creation of a tailored treatment plan, and appointments will be arranged in accordance with this plan.

Please be aware that the fee for the patch test is non-redeemable and non-refundable once the Patch Test has been conducted.

Electrolysis – 10 Minute Session

  • 20 min
  • £25

Patch Test Requirement

New clients must undergo a Patch Test at our clinic before treatment can commence. Patch Tests carried out at other salons or clinics will not be accepted.

Appointment Structure

Each appointment is divided into two stages. The first 10 minutes are allocated to preparation, which includes discussing any areas previously treated (if relevant), addressing any client concerns, and evaluating the progress of the treatment. The remaining 10 minutes focus on the actual electrolysis treatment process.

Electrolysis works by targeting individual hair follicles and relies on hair growth cycles for effectiveness. As such, achieving the desired results requires multiple sessions. Regular weekly sessions are strongly recommended, and there is a Course of 10 Treatment Package available to support your treatment plan.
